Deviance in Sport

On November 2nd, My American Sport class in the 21st century discussed the topic of deviance in Sports today.  We discussed the different degrees of deviance, these degrees are Culturally specific, and Situationally specific. We also talked about how violence in sport parallels with the reality of violence in society as a whole.

Examples of Deviance in Society:
  • The use of Illegal drugs
  • Violent crimes- Murder, rape, abuse, Battery
  • Stealing/ Robing a bank
Examples of deviance in Sports:
  • Drug use
  • Domestic abuse
  • Deflating Footballs
  • fighting
  • Bounty hunting
  • Academic Cheating
  • Performance enhancing drugs
  • Gambling
  • Illegal recruiting processes
Deviance Among Athletes
Athletes are commonly found cheating, playing dirty, fighting, and violence. These are a lot more popular in sports today rather than in the past. It was found that a little over 80% of men and women in the top level of college sports in the USA sustain at least one serious injury while playing their sport.

Exact Sports: Deviance in Sports
In the article I found online, Exact Sports talked about deviance in sports overtime and in today's Professional leagues.  He talked about deviance in a way when he said "Upon striving for this brilliance, athletes, as well as fans, become identified with their teams/sport and at times act out in ways that disrupt the romanticized view of professional sports." This was interesting because I feel athletes make mistakes whenever trying to become the best athlete they can be, and in doing so, these athlete commit deviance just because they want to be the best. This relates to lass because we discussed the different acts of deviance that occur in sports. Exact sports had a good pint whenever he stated that deviance started occurring whenever the importance of this competitive lifestyle started to grow and become very import to the world.
